“My film is called The Vacation and it is a 2024 thriller film inspired by the movie Cleveland Abduction. Our film is based in Florida and it is about 3 girls from Utah, that are on Vacation in a Vacation home in Florida, that decide to be naive and take an Uber ride to a restaurant after hearing a news report about 3 girls getting kidnapped by their Uber driver.”

Working in the thriller genre was a no brainer. The excitement and suspense you get from a thriller movie is like no other. This is what inspireme to commit to this genre and produce my own thriller film.
Moving on, we begin the movie with a close up shot of the speaker that then turns into a dolly shot to show who is turning the volume up of the speaker and to introduce the first character of the movie.
Insert clip of beginning of scene.
Then a match cut is used from the Blaire being in the room, to her then walking out of the room.
Insert clip.
She then walks into the bathroom where a two shot is then displayed since Blaire is in the bathroom with Estella. Soon after, Alexandria walks in making the shot a three shot. Blaire then walks out of the bathroom and a match cut is used and the scene cuts from Blaire walking back into the room to a close up shot of her picking up the phone.
Insert clip.
A close up shot is used to show that Blaire is going to now order the Uber. As soon as she sit down, Estella walks into the room and the camera cuts from Estella to the TV to show the audience what is occurring.

There is a dolly shot used to show the news report and then it cuts to the scene of the news report. From the news report it jump cuts to Estella and Alexandria questioning what Blaire is watching.
Insert clip
The scene then jump cuts from all the girls leaving the room to Alexandria sitting on the bed on her phone tracking the Uber. As soon as they all leave the room the scene jump cuts to them walking out of the door.
Insert clip
From the girls walking down the stairs the scene jumps to the Uber waiting for them to establish the car that the Uber picked them up in. It then jump cuts to the girls getting into the car and an over the shoulder shot of the creepy Uber driver.
“Now moving onto Mise-en-scene and sound. In the film the girl are wearing light colors to depict a light and joyful tone. There is also a lot of light in the rooms to show a sense of clarity. The Uber driver however is shown as a dark person as he is wearing a dark outfit with a mask and gloves to hide his identity and he is driving a black car to show a sense of fear and creepiness.” Sound plays a major role in this film opening as we use light and joyful music to set the scene of the opening and to depict that there is no danger or sense of danger.

“How does our film The Vacation use or challenge conventions? In our film we use the aspects of identity Age and Gender. Mainly women are portrayed in our film as they are a major target of kidnappings. In this film we have women get kidnapped and talked to creepily as it is more common for them to get talked to nasty and to get kidnapped. Age is used as the women in our film are between the ages of 18-22. We challenge the convention as most kidnappings are of little girls or boys between the ages of 4-10. We portray these women at the ages of 18-22 because the amount of women that are kidnapped at these ages is not commonly shown or put out for the world to see.”

“Furthermore, are film will be distributed by the company Netflix. It will be a Netflix original produced by NBL Productions. I decided to have my film released on Netflix as it is easier for people to have access to the movie if they have a Netflix subscription. I also want it to be released on Netflix as it is a film that was produced to bring awareness to kidnapping and to bring awareness to everyone especially women. People normally take Ubers and don’t really have a conscious as to what could happen when taking an Uber. People take Ubers without the thought that they could possibly be kidnapped. Therefore, this movie has been produced to bring awareness to those who take Ubers or the parents who have their kids take Ubers.”

“Throughout this process i have learned a huge amount. I have learned the importance of cinematography and how important it is to get the right shot and angle. I have also learned a little bit more about editing as before I did not know how to edit at all as I did not have to edit anything, but now I know how to edit clips together and how to do match cuts, jump cuts, and more. I also learned the importance of mise-en-scene and sound. I can now recognize why characters are dressed the way they are and why the setting looks like how it does. I also now know how and where to place sound and the importance of where I place it. In my film we had diegetic sound throughout the film opening, however it was joyful and light to express and demonstrate to the audience that there is no sense of danger.”

“How did you integrate technologies- software, hardware, and online into The Vacation?
We used an Iphone 13 to reocrd and edit our whole film opening. We also used a tripod when we were not filming tracking shots.
Thank you.
